HYDRO BAN Cementitious is a one-component, polymer-fortified cement powder that mixes with clean water into a trowel- or roller-applied waterproofing membrane. There is no second liquid component to measure out and no fabric to embed across the field, so it goes on close to how a skim coat does, just in two coats instead of one. Once cured, the membrane handles positive and negative hydrostatic pressure up to 2 bars (29 psi) at the required 40 mil thickness, and it carries a rapid 2-hour flood test window at 70°F, which is fast for a cementitious waterproofing membrane for tile.
It is built for wet walls and floors: bathrooms and kitchens, swimming pools, fountains and water features, spas and hot tubs, and balconies and terraces over unoccupied space, indoors or out. It is also suitable for partially tiled applications, such as pool waterlines, tiled swimming lanes and tiled targets, and it can be used under pool plaster. Tile, brick or stone goes directly onto the cured membrane with a latex thin-set mortar.
One limit matters for anyone searching for shower waterproofing: HYDRO BAN Cementitious is not for shower floors or pan liners, and not for steam rooms. Those applications call for a membrane rated for that kind of sustained, pooling moisture at the floor. It is suited to shower walls and the rest of a bathroom, but for the shower pan itself, use a membrane built for that job, such as Laticrete’s liquid HYDRO BAN.
Mixing is straightforward: about 3.7 to 4 quarts of water per 30 lb bag, blended with a drill and paddle at medium speed for 90 seconds. No slaking, no waiting period. You get 80 minutes of working time before the mix starts to set up, which is enough to prep and apply a typical shower wall or small pool area in one batch.
HYDRO BAN Cementitious exceeds ANSI A118.10 for waterproofing and carries an “Extra Heavy” rating under the TCNA’s ASTM C627 Robinson Floor Test. It is UL GREENGUARD certified for low chemical emissions and LEED compliant, and it bonds directly to metal, PVC and ABS plumbing fixtures as well as to concrete, masonry and tile substrates.
A cement-based waterproofing membrane for tile has a real advantage over some liquid-applied systems: there is no RH percentage limit on the concrete it goes over, so it can go down on a slab that is still giving off moisture, as long as the surface itself is sound and free of standing water. What it asks for in return is a true 40 mil dry film, in two full 20 mil coats, checked with a wet film gauge, since a thin or uneven coat is the most common way a cementitious membrane under-performs.
If the job is a shower pan, a steam room, or any area where a sheet or liquid membrane is the better fit, Laticrete’s single-component liquid HYDRO BAN membrane is the one built for that. Cementitious and liquid HYDRO BAN cover different parts of the same wet-area job, and many bathrooms end up using both.
It is a one-component, polymer-fortified cementitious waterproofing membrane. You mix the powder with water and apply it with a roller, brush or trowel in two coats, and it waterproofs walls and floors in wet areas.
Both are Laticrete waterproofing membranes, but Cementitious is a powder you mix with water, while the liquid version comes ready to use. Cementitious is not rated for shower floors, pan liners or steam rooms; for those, the liquid HYDRO BAN membrane is the right product.
It is suited to shower walls and the rest of a bathroom, but not to shower floors or pan liners, and not to steam rooms. Use a membrane rated for that job on the pan itself.
Yes, it is listed for swimming pools, fountains and water features, including partially tiled areas such as waterlines, swimming lanes and targets, and it can be used under pool plaster.
Positive and negative hydrostatic pressure up to 2 bars (29 psi), at the required 40 mil dry thickness.
Pour about 3.7 to 4 quarts of clean water per 30 lb bag into a pail, add the powder, and mix with a drill and paddle at medium speed for 90 seconds. No slaking is needed.
About 80 minutes of pot life.
Two coats at 20 mils each, for a combined 40 mils dry. That thickness is what gives it its hydrostatic pressure rating, so check it with a wet film gauge.
About 120 sq ft at the required 40 mil thickness.
As little as 2 hours after the final coat cures at 70°F and 50% RH. At 50°F to 69°F, allow 24 hours, and longer in cold or wet conditions.
Not across the field. Laticrete does call for 6 in. waterproofing and anti-fracture fabric at movement joints, embedded in a liberal coat of the membrane, along with LATASIL and a backer rod.
No. New concrete needs at least 14 days of cure at 70°F before you apply the membrane. There is no humidity percentage limit on the concrete itself once that cure time has passed.
Concrete, concrete and brick masonry, cement mortar beds, cement plaster, cement terrazzo, cement backer board, ceramic tile and stone, and gypsum wallboard for interior, non-wet areas. It does not bond to OSB, particle board, interior glue plywood, luan, Masonite or hardwood.
Tile Pro Depot sells the 30 lb bag online and ships nationwide. Add it to your cart above.
A 30 lb bag covers about 120 sq ft (11.2 m²) at the required 40 mil dry thickness, applied as two 20 mil coats. That is the waterproofing coverage figure; porous or uneven substrates can use more.
Figures are typical results from Laticrete’s data sheet (DS-386.2). Actual performance depends on installation methods and site conditions.
