By chasing, you’ll use a hammer and a cold chisel to break away the loose edges within the crack. The patch can only be as strong as the material that it is bonded to, so removing any loose areas is essential. After chasing the crack remove any debris. If the pieces are large you can remove them with your fingers, but if they’re smaller you could enlist the help of a shop vac.
Once the debris has been removed thoroughly clean the substrate. Take care to eliminate any dust, dirt, oil, grease, paint, or anything else that could interfere with bonding, but do not use any chemical cleaners.
Next, inspect the area for contraction joints, construction joints, and cracks that may move after installation. You must maintain these areas as joints after the patch. Ensure the temperature of the cement is between 40 degrees and 90 degrees during application, and that the air temperature is between 50 and 90 degrees during drying, so the patching compound can set properly.
After the patch is dry, you can install your tile over the cement as you traditionally would, utilizing your preferred methods.
