How to Tile Corners with Corner Tile Trim

When completing a tile installation project, it’s important to know that you have options when it comes to finishing the corners. If you prefer a more traditional look, you can finish the corners with tile, but if you prefer something more modern and efficient, corner tile trim is a great solution.

Corner tile trim can make the finished product, whether it be a bathroom, kitchen, or outdoor area, appear very put together and streamlined.

Before installing the corner tile trim, it’s important to prepare your wall. Seal all the wall joins with thinset and paper tape, and then sand them thoroughly to ensure they’re even with the rest of the wall. If they’re not even, your tiles won’t be plumb, and they either won’t be watertight or they’ll be unsightly. If the walls you’re tiling over are made of brick, use a large scraper to remove all irregularities on the surface, and then brush it to remove dust and residue.

How to use Corner Tile Trim

Next, install your tile in your preferred method. Most traditionally you’ll use a thinset mortar and lay your tile while keeping it evenly proportioned with spacers. Be sure to measure each tile to ensure it will fit proportionately, and if it doesn’t give it a quick cut with some tile nippers.

When installing a tile corner trim, choose one that will complement the tile color. Slide it into place and use a spirit level to ensure it is perfectly straight and flush with your tiles. To secure the corner trim in place, apply thinset to the back of the tiles you’re working with, and then fit them into position. There is a small channel inside the trim, and that is where the tiles should be fit. Take care not to push the tiles entirely inside the trim, and try to leave about 1/10th of an inch of room to allow for expansion. Once the tile is placed, the adhesive on the back of the tiles will stick the corner tile trim in place.

Take a step back and confirm the corner tile trim is installed properly. There should be no gaps between the trim and the tiles. Once you’re confident in its installation, fill in all spaces with grout. Clean with a dry cloth to remove excess residue, and voila, corner trim installation complete. You customer will be sure to appreciate your handiwork.
