About Laticrete HYDRO BAN liquid waterproofing membrane

HYDRO BAN is a liquid waterproofing membrane that you brush, roll, trowel or spray on, and it dries into a thin, seamless, flexible layer. It is a single-component, self-curing rubber polymer, so there is nothing to mix, and it does double duty as a crack isolation membrane, protecting tile from shrinkage and other non-structural cracks up to 1/8 inch. Cured, the film is only 0.020 to 0.030 inch thick, and you can set tile, brick or stone directly on it.

The big difference from a sheet system is what you skip. HYDRO BAN does not need fabric in the field, in coves or in corners, and it bonds straight to metal, PVC and ABS plumbing fixtures. If you want extra reinforcement at cracks, joints, curves, drains or penetrations, Laticrete allows a 6 inch waterproofing and anti-fracture fabric there, but it is optional.

It is rated for a long list of wet jobs: shower pans, stalls and tub surrounds, bathrooms and laundries, swimming pools, fountains and water features, spas and hot tubs, kitchens and food processing areas, and balconies and terraces over unoccupied space, indoors and out. Steam rooms are on the list too, as long as you add a vapor barrier. HYDRO BAN is not the vapor barrier.

You apply two coats, and the color tells you where you are. HYDRO BAN goes on light sage green and cures to a darker olive green, so thin spots and missed areas stand out before they get buried under tile. Wait until the first coat has turned olive before applying the second. After the final coat has cured, you can flood test in as little as 2 hours at 70°F, which keeps a tight schedule moving.

HYDRO BAN carries a “Extra Heavy” rating on the ASTM C627 Robinson Floor Test and exceeds ANSI A118.10 and A118.12. It has ICC-ES report ESR-2417, IAPMO approval and a Miami-Dade NOA, and it is UL GREENGUARD certified for low chemical emissions. Antimicrobial protection is built in to help keep the membrane itself free of stain- and odor-causing mold and mildew. For shower pan use, get approval from your local building code authority first.

This listing is the 5 gallon pail, which covers about 250 square feet with two coats.

Best for, and not for

Best for

  • Shower pans, shower walls and tub surrounds under tile or stone
  • Bathroom and laundry floors, and kitchens and food processing areas
  • Pools, fountains, spas and hot tubs, where the membrane can cover the whole pan
  • Balconies and terraces over unoccupied spaces, and exterior veneers, once covered with tile, stone or brick
  • Tile over shrinkage cracks and other non-structural cracks up to 1/8 inch

Not for

  • OSB, particle board, interior glue plywood, luan, Masonite or hardwood surfaces
  • Cracks wider than 1/8 in. (3 mm), structural cracks, cracks with vertical movement, or dynamic expansion joints
  • A primary roofing membrane over occupied space
  • Use as a vapor barrier, especially in steam rooms
  • Areas with negative hydrostatic pressure or excessive vapor transmission, or exposure to rubber solvents or ketones
  • Use under cement or other plaster finishes, self-leveling underlayments or decorative wear surfaces
  • Single-layer wood floors or plywood tubs, showers or fountains
  • Being left uncovered. Unprotected membrane can sit exposed to sun and weather for no more than 30 days.
  • Limited-area use in submerged jobs, such as only at the waterline. Submerged installations need one continuous waterproof pan.

Choosing a liquid waterproofing membrane

Tile, thinset and grout do not waterproof a wall or floor. Laticrete says so plainly: mortars, adhesives and grouts are not replacements for a waterproofing membrane, so wherever water has to be kept out of the structure, a membrane goes under the tile.

Liquid and sheet membranes both do the job. A liquid membrane like HYDRO BAN wraps corners, curves and drains in one seamless coat and needs no fabric in the field, coves or corners. The trade-off is that the waterproofing depends on the film you actually apply, so you need two full coats and a wet film gauge to check thickness, then a flood test before you tile. If you are comparing a liquid waterproofing membrane for a shower or a floor, look for two things on the data sheet: a waterproofing standard such as ANSI A118.10, and a crack isolation rating such as A118.12. HYDRO BAN meets both.

  • No fabric needed in the field, coves or corners. Optional 6 in. fabric at cracks, joints, drains and penetrations.
  • Flood test in 2 hours at 70°F (21°C) and 50% RH after the final cure.
  • Only 0.020 to 0.030 in. (0.5 to 0.8 mm) when cured.
  • Bonds directly to metal, PVC and ABS plumbing fixtures.
  • Crack isolation up to 1/8 in. (3 mm) over shrinkage and other non-structural cracks.
  • “Extra Heavy” rating on the ASTM C627 Robinson Floor Test, per TCNA performance levels.
  • Color-change cure. Light sage green when wet, olive green when cured, so coverage is easy to check.
  • Antimicrobial protection built in to fight stain-causing mold and mildew on the membrane.
  • Fast to tile. Rapid drying, with time to tile as short as 15 to 50 minutes depending on the substrate.
  • Tile goes right on. Set tile, brick or stone directly onto the membrane.
  • Exceeds ANSI A118.10 and A118.12, and IAPMO PS106 approved.
  • Non-flammable, with a lighter color that makes inspection easier.

Before you start

  • Surface temperature has to be between 45°F and 90°F (10°C to 32°C) during application and for 24 hours afterward.
  • Substrates must be structurally sound, clean and free of dirt, oil, grease, paint, laitance, efflorescence, sealers and curing compounds. Damp is fine. Standing water is not, so sweep off any excess.
  • Concrete should be smooth to a wood float finish or better and flat to within 1/4 in. in 10 ft. Moisture should not exceed 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours (ASTM F-1869) or 85% relative humidity (ASTM F-2170).
  • Let wet mortar beds cure 72 hours at 70°F (21°C) before applying HYDRO BAN.
  • Check deflection on wood floors: no more than L/360 for ceramic tile, L/480 for stone and L/600 for exterior veneer.
  • Over poured gypsum underlayment, prime first with the manufacturer’s sealer or with one part HYDRO BAN diluted with four parts clean water, and let it dry about 24 hours. Vinyl flooring needs a skim coat of Laticrete 254 first.
  • Have a wet film thickness gauge on hand.

Apply the membrane

  1. Fill substrate cracks, cold joints and control joints with latex-fortified thinset, or use a liberal coat of HYDRO BAN. Then brush or roll a liberal coat about 8 in. wide over each crack or joint. A 6 in. waterproofing and anti-fracture fabric can be embedded here if you want it.
  2. Treat coves and floor-to-wall transitions the same way. Fill them smooth with thinset, or use a liberal coat for transitions under 1/8 in.
  3. At drains, use a bonding flange or clamping ring type with weepers (ASME A112.6.3). Coat around and over the flange, add a second coat, and once it dries, run a bead of Laticrete LATASIL silicone where the membrane meets the drain throat before you set the top half of the clamping ring.
  4. Around pipes and other penetrations, leave at least 1/8 in. of space to the surrounding tile. Pack any gap with thinset, coat around the opening, add a second coat up to the level of the tile, and seal the flashing with LATASIL once dry.
  5. Let the pretreated areas dry to the touch. Then apply a liberal first coat over the whole area with a brush or roller (or trowel or sprayer). Each wet coat should be 15 to 22 mils (0.4 to 0.6 mm), which works out to about 100 sq ft per gallon per coat. Check it with the gauge.
  6. Wait until the first coat has dried to a uniform olive green, about 1 to 2 hours at 70°F and 50% RH, then apply the second coat. Sprayed coats take roughly 45 to 90 minutes to dry, and the second coat goes on at right angles to the first.
  7. When the last coat is dry to the touch, inspect for pinholes, voids and thin spots and patch them with more HYDRO BAN.

Test, tile and protect

  1. Flood test only after the second coat has fully cured and no light sage areas show. Allow about 2 hours at 70°F and 50% RH. At 50°F to 69°F, allow 24 hours. Cold or wet conditions need longer.
  2. Once the membrane is dry to the touch, set ceramic tile, stone or brick with a latex thinset mortar. For thick bed mortar, epoxy adhesive, terrazzo, or moisture-sensitive resilient or wood flooring, let HYDRO BAN cure 2 hours at 70°F first. Do not put solvent-based adhesives directly on it.
  3. Use a white latex thinset for white and light-colored marble. For green or moisture-sensitive marble, agglomerates and resin-backed tile or stone, use LATAPOXY 300.
  4. Keep new membrane out of rain and water for at least 2 hours at 70°F, and off traffic until it is fully cured. Use protection board for any temporary cover.
  5. Include sealant-filled joints over control joints in the substrate, and expansion joints at coves, corners, perimeters and penetrations. Use LATASIL with a backer rod. Never fill those spaces with grout.

Time to tile at 70°F (21°C) and 50% RH

After the second coat, the wait before tiling depends on what is underneath:

  • Concrete: about 50 minutes
  • Cement board: about 30 minutes
  • Fiber cement underlayment: about 15 minutes

Actual times shift with the substrate, temperature and humidity.

How far a pail goes

A 5 gallon pail covers about 250 sq ft (23.2 m²) with the two required coats. Each wet coat covers roughly 100 sq ft per gallon. Spraying uses more product because of bounce-back and overspray.

Frequently asked questions

What is Laticrete HYDRO BAN?

It is a single-component liquid waterproofing and crack isolation membrane. You apply it with a brush, roller, trowel or sprayer, it cures into a thin, seamless, flexible layer, and you set tile, brick or stone right on top.

Do I need fabric with HYDRO BAN?

Not in the field, coves or corners. Laticrete does allow a 6 in. waterproofing and anti-fracture fabric at cracks, joints, curves, corners, drains and penetrations if you want extra reinforcement. For gaps 1/8 in. or smaller, follow the instructions in DS 663.5.

How many coats does it need?

Two. Every area needs two full coats, each about 0.015 to 0.022 in. wet. Let the first coat cure to a uniform olive green before applying the second.

How much does a 5 gallon pail cover?

About 250 sq ft with two coats. Each wet coat covers roughly 100 sq ft per gallon. Spraying uses more because of overspray.

How long until I can flood test?

About 2 hours after the final coat has cured at 70°F and 50% RH. At 50°F to 69°F, wait 24 hours. Cold or wet conditions need longer. Make sure no light sage areas are left before you test.

How long until I can tile over it?

Once the membrane is dry to the touch you can set tile with latex thinset. After the second coat at 70°F, time to tile is about 50 minutes over concrete, 30 over cement board and 15 over fiber cement underlayment.

Why does it change color?

HYDRO BAN goes on light sage green and cures to olive green. The color change shows you when a coat has cured and helps you spot thin or missed areas.

Can I use it in a shower?

Yes. Shower pans, stalls and tub surrounds are listed uses. Get local building code approval before using it in a shower pan, apply two full coats, and flood test before tiling.

Can I use it in a pool or fountain?

Yes, pools, fountains, spas and hot tubs are listed uses. In submerged jobs the membrane has to form one continuous pan with no voids, so do not apply it only at the waterline.

Can I put it over plywood or OSB?

Not over OSB, particle board, interior glue plywood, luan, Masonite or hardwood. Exterior glue plywood is allowed for interior use only, on a floor that meets Laticrete’s minimum construction and deflection requirements. Do not install it directly over single-layer wood floors or plywood tubs, showers or fountains.

Will it stop cracks from telegraphing through tile?

It provides crack isolation for shrinkage and other non-structural cracks up to 1/8 in. (3 mm). It is not for cracks wider than that, structural cracks, cracks with vertical movement, or dynamic expansion joints.

Can I use it in a steam room, or on a balcony?

HYDRO BAN is listed for steam rooms only when used together with a vapor barrier. It is not a vapor barrier itself. Balconies and terraces are fine over unoccupied spaces, but it is not a primary roofing membrane over occupied space, and the membrane must be covered with tile, stone or brick. It can be left unprotected for no more than 30 days.

What warranty comes with it?

Laticrete lists a 1 Year Product Warranty and 10 Year, 25 Year and Lifetime System Warranties. The system warranties apply to LATICRETE system installations, so check the warranty documents for what your job qualifies for.
