A suitable alternative to Laticrete 3701 Mortar Admix combined with 226 Thick Bed.
You can get your work done faster and cheaper when you opt for Laticrete 3701. The reason for this is its unique high strength formula sets faster and gains very high bond strength on drying. If you have been using Type S or Type N mortar in your tile work, you can replace them and use Laticrete 3701 as a scratch or finish coat. This product is compliant with standard construction codes like ASTM C270.
When you use the Laticrete 3701 fortified mortar bed you can get a coverage of around 12 square feet with a ½” bed, 6 square feet with 1” bed, and 3 square feet with a 2” bed. In case you are installing green marble or any other moisture sensitive stone, then you should add a good quality adhesive to the mortar before setting the tile.
If you are looking for an exceptionally mortar bed, you should try the Laticrete 3701 fortified mortar bed at Tile Pro Depot. It comes to you in a plastic bag holding 60 lbs. of the mix, and you don’t need to add anything else other than water to it. There are 56 bags per pallet.
When tiles are laid on any surface, either a thin-bed method or a mortar bed method is used. A thin-bed method uses a thin-set mortar mix made of cement and other materials to ensure that the tile sticks to the surface. This surface could be concrete, plywood, or a bed of mortar. The layer is quite thin (hence the name), and therefore needs less time to apply. The usual thickness is as thin as 3/16”. One issue commonly faced with thin-bed method of laying tiles is that any movement in the subfloor below the tile could get transferred to the tile above it, causing cracks or even breakage in the tile. That is why the mortar bed method is more commonly used.
The thick mortar method uses a thick and viscous mix of pure or fortified mortar. The mortar is made with cement, coarse aggregates and other necessary additives. The mortar is then compacted well and made flat. This process is called screeding. The tile is then placed carefully on top of it. As the thick mortar dries further, it bonds the tile with the substrate. Because of the larger volume of cementitious materials involved in the bonding, and the thicker base to sit on, the bond in this method is much stronger.
