Methods to Waterproof Flooring

Installing a perfect tile floor is hard work, so you’re going to want to ensure it’s properly waterproofed. Effectively waterproofing the floor will preserve your handiwork and allow the floor to last for many years with proper maintenance.

When it comes to floor waterproofing, there are a handful of different approaches you can take to garner the same results. You could take the more traditional approach and utilize a fabric membrane, or you could use a more recent development and use liquid waterproofing membrane.

Floor Waterproofing with Fabric Membrane

If you choose to waterproof the floor with a fabric membrane, we have several options for you to choose from at Tile Pro Depot.

If you’re looking for the security and protection of a sheet membrane, we recommend the Laticrete HYDRO BAN Waterproof Fabric Membrane. This membrane is a high performance low-perm product that can be used in interior, residential, and commercial areas. It’s a perfect waterproofing solution for heavily saturated areas like steam rooms and steam showers.

The Hydro Ban fabric membrane is made of thin, durable polyethylene with a fused non-woven polypropylene exterior surface for optimum bond strength. This membrane allows for quick installs and retain their integrity for the life of the installation.

Another product we recommend is the Blanke Aqua Shield Waterproofing Fabric. This product can be applied with thinset to most dry, flat, and structurally sound surfaces and tile can be installed directly over top without the cure time required for liquid applied products. Aqua Shield guarantees long lasting moisture protection, and is great for continuously wet areas like shower stalls and bathrooms.

Liquid Floor Waterproofing

If you’d prefer a less time consuming and tedious waterproofing option, liquid waterproofing is an excellent choice. Utilizing Laticrete HYDRO BAN Liquid Waterproofing Membrane will speed up your installation time significantly.

This liquid membrane is formulated from rubber polymer and is self-curing. It forms a thin, seamless, and flexible membrane and can bond directly to metal, PVC, or ABS plumbing fixtures. Fabric is not needed during the installation, even in corners and coves, and flood testing can be conducted in just two hours after the final cure.

Hydro Ban liquid membrane is much quicker and easier to install than traditional sheet membrane. When installing, the liquid will transform from a light sage to a dark green, indicating to you that it is cured and ready for tile. This membrane also boasts anti-fracture protection of up to 1/8″ (3 mm) over shrinkage and other non-structural cracks, as well as a Laticrete lifetime system warranty.
