BLANKE PERMAT is a multifunctional reinforcing underlayment designed for interior ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tile installations. Unlike a basic separation membrane, PERMAT uses a layered reinforcing mesh system to add strength to the tile assembly while helping manage movement in the substrate.

At approximately 1/8 inch thick, PERMAT is a practical choice when floor height matters. It can be especially useful over wood subfloors where additional reinforcement is needed but adding another layer of plywood or a thicker backer board is not desirable. The system also provides crack-isolation protection over suitable cement-based substrates.

Each panel is installed in thinset mortar with the fleece side down. The factory mesh overhangs overlap adjoining sheets, so separate seam tape is not required. Once the panels are embedded and the mesh is filled with mortar, tile can be installed in the same work sequence.

PERMAT is suited to a wide range of tile work, including large-format porcelain and natural stone, subject to the substrate and installation requirements for the project. One carton contains 30 panels and covers approximately 195 square feet.

Best For

  • Wood subfloors that need added reinforcement before tile installation
  • Projects where keeping the finished floor assembly thin is important
  • Ceramic, porcelain, large-format tile, and natural stone installations
  • Installations where crack-isolation protection is needed over a suitable substrate
  • Residential or commercial floors requiring a durable reinforcing underlayment

Before You Use It

Confirm that the substrate, joist spacing, mortar, tile type, movement joints, and project conditions meet current BLANKE requirements. PERMAT is not a substitute for correcting a weak, damaged, excessively flexible, or otherwise unsuitable floor structure.

What Is Included

  • 30 BLANKE PERMAT panels per carton
  • Approximately 195 sq. ft. of total coverage per carton
  • Mortar, tile, grout, movement-joint profiles, and installation tools are sold separately

Coverage and Quantity Guidance

For planning purposes, divide the project square footage by 195 sq. ft. and round up to the next full carton. Allow additional material for cuts, layout changes, damaged pieces, and site conditions. For larger commercial jobs, it is usually better to order the full project quantity at one time to help avoid delays.

  • Reinforces Wood Subfloors: The layered mesh system adds reinforcement to the tile assembly and helps reduce vertical movement in suitable plywood and OSB subfloors.
  • Low 1/8-Inch Profile: The thin profile helps minimize height transitions between tile and neighboring floor finishes.
  • Crack-Isolation Protection: PERMAT helps isolate the tile covering from stress and movement that can occur in suitable cement-based substrates.
  • Layered Reinforcing Construction: The system combines alkali-resistant glass-fiber reinforcement, HDPE mesh, and a polypropylene fleece backing.
  • Self-Seaming Panel Design: Factory mesh overhangs connect adjoining sheets, eliminating the need for separate seam tape in standard installations.
  • Suitable for Tile and Natural Stone: PERMAT can be used beneath ceramic, porcelain, large-format tile, and natural stone when the supporting assembly meets project requirements.
  • High-Load Performance: BLANKE reports Heavy Industrial performance in Robinson Floor Testing, making PERMAT suitable for demanding applications when installed as specified.
  • Lightweight, Easy-to-Handle Panels: The panel format is easy to carry, cut, position, and install compared with many thicker board-type underlayments.

Compatible Products and Accessories

Complete the installation with the mortar, trowel, mixing tools, movement-joint profiles, and other tile-setting accessories required for the project. Where possible, link this section to compatible Tile Pro Depot products rather than relying only on a generic related-products carousel.

  1. Prepare the substrate

Make sure the floor is clean, dry, flat, load-bearing, and free of dust, coatings, debris, or contaminants that could interfere with mortar bond.

  1. Choose the correct mortar

Use a thinset mortar that is suitable for both the substrate and the tile installation. Follow the mortar manufacturer’s instructions for mixing and open time.

  1. Apply mortar to the floor

Spread the mortar with the trowel size specified by BLANKE for PERMAT installation. Work only over an area that can be covered before the mortar skins over.

  1. Install PERMAT fleece-side down

Place the panel into fresh mortar with the white fleece backing facing the substrate. Press it firmly into place with a float or roller to achieve full contact.

  1. Join adjoining panels

Butt the panels together and overlap the factory mesh extensions. Separate seam tape is normally not required.

  1. Maintain perimeter movement space

Leave the required clearance at walls, columns, and other restraining vertical surfaces. Do not bridge required movement or expansion joints.

  1. Fill the reinforcing mesh

Use thinset mortar to fill the mesh and panel surface before combing additional mortar for the tile.

  1. Install the tile

Set the tile using the trowel and coverage appropriate for the tile size and project. Tile installation can continue after PERMAT is properly embedded.

Installation note: Always follow the current BLANKE PERMAT installation instructions, applicable tile-industry standards, mortar-manufacturer instructions, and project-specific substrate requirements. Verify suitability for heated floors, wet areas, exterior work, unusual substrates, or special-use assemblies before installation.

Concrete and Cement-Based Substrates: PERMAT can be used as a reinforcing and crack-isolation underlayment over suitable cement-based floors.

Natural Stone Assemblies: Natural stone has more demanding substrate requirements than many ceramic or porcelain tiles. Confirm the complete floor assembly before installation.

Heated Floors and Special Applications: Verify compatibility and system requirements with BLANKE before using PERMAT in heated-floor or other special-use assemblies.

Warranty

Warranty coverage depends on the complete installation assembly and current BLANKE warranty terms. Review the latest manufacturer warranty before installation, especially for projects involving natural stone, unusual substrates, high-load conditions, or system-specific coverage.

BLANKE PERMAT is designed for installers who need more than a basic uncoupling layer. Its reinforcing mesh construction strengthens the tile assembly, helps reduce deflection in suitable wood subfloors, and keeps the underlayment profile to approximately 1/8 inch. That combination makes it useful on remodels, transitions, large-format tile work, and other installations where both floor support and finished height matter.

Compared with conventional board-type underlayments, PERMAT is lightweight and easy to handle. Compared with simple roll membranes, it is built around reinforcement as well as movement management. BLANKE also reports higher compression and tensile performance than conventional rolled uncoupling products in its current product literature.

For contractors, the panel format can simplify handling and layout. The factory mesh overhangs connect adjacent sheets without separate seam tape, and tile can be installed as part of the same installation sequence after the underlayment has been properly embedded.

Tile Pro Depot Installer Tip

Do not choose an underlayment by thickness alone. Before ordering, check the floor structure, joist spacing, substrate type, tile size, and whether the project involves natural stone. PERMAT can add valuable reinforcement, but the supporting floor still has to meet the requirements of the complete tile assembly.

Common Product Questions
